Ladakh — the "Land of High Passes" — is one of the most photographed, most bucket-listed regions in the world, and consistently rated among travellers' favourite trips to India. This itinerary covers every essential Ladakh highlight: Leh's palaces and monasteries, the world's highest motorable roads, the double-humped camels of Nubra Valley, and the shifting blues of Pangong Lake, all paced with proper acclimatization built in so travellers can enjoy the altitude comfortably rather than rush through it.
Arrive Leh by flight (3,500m). Complete rest for the day is essential for altitude acclimatization — no sightseeing, plenty of fluids, and an early night. Overnight in Leh.
Gentle half-day of local sightseeing once acclimatized: Leh Palace, a nine-storey former royal residence overlooking the town, and Shanti Stupa, built by Japanese Buddhist monks, offering panoramic valley views. Evening walk through Leh's Old Town bazaar. Overnight in Leh.
Full day visiting Ladakh's most significant monasteries: Thiksey Monastery, resembling a mini Potala Palace and often timed to catch the monks' morning prayers; Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest gompa in Ladakh, founded in the 17th century; and Shey Palace, once the summer residence of Ladakhi royalty. Overnight in Leh.
Morning drive over Khardung La (approx. 5,359m), one of the highest motorable passes in the world, descending into the dramatic Nubra Valley (approx. 120 km / 4-5 hrs). Afternoon camel safari on the double-humped Bactrian camels at Hunder's sand dunes — a landscape more reminiscent of Central Asia than the Himalayas. Overnight in Nubra Valley.
Morning visit to Diskit Monastery, overlooking the valley and home to a towering 32m Maitreya Buddha statue. Visit the Nubra River confluence and, if time permits, the hot springs at Panamik. Overnight in Nubra Valley.
Morning drive from Nubra to Pangong Lake via Shyok village (approx. 160 km / 6-7 hrs), one of the most scenic drives in the region. Arrive by afternoon at the famous high-altitude lake, straddling the India-China border and known for its ever-shifting shades of blue. Overnight near Pangong Lake.
Morning by the lake for sunrise views before driving back to Leh via Chang La pass (approx. 160 km / 5-6 hrs). En route, stop at Magnetic Hill, an optical-illusion stretch of road where vehicles appear to roll uphill, and the Sangam, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. Overnight in Leh.
Morning at leisure for last-minute shopping — Pashmina shawls, Tibetan handicrafts, and local jewellery. Transfer to Leh airport for onward/international flight connection.
